Bucharest and Boarding

Tuesday, October 20

Bags out at 7:45 and off to breakfast before we board the busses for the city tour. Bucharest has been the capital of Romania for over 500 years, and is known as the "Paris of Eastern Europe". They even have their own Arc D’Triumph! There are some beautiful buildings, old and new, reflecting the architecture of the Romans, Turks, and Greeks, who have all left their marks here. We visited the Revolutionary Square, where Nicolai Chouchescu spoke for the last time and 100,000 citizens showed up to boo him. We saw the building where he fled and was rescued by helicopter from the roof. We saw the Parliament Building, the second largest building in the world, which was built by Chouchescu.

Lunch at a lake side restaurant was included. They had an army of waiters to serve us and a flute band and dancers to entertain us.

Finally, we were taken to the Danube to board our ship, the River Odyssey. After settling into our cabins, we listened to a debriefing and then went to our first dinner on board. There was some type of entertainment later, but we were still suffering from jet lag, so made it an early night.

  1. Bucharest is a fantastic city. I love being there. The atmosphere of the city is more than unique, with all the Belle Epoque buildings, cosy restaurants with delicious food, hospitable and stylish Bucharest hotels and numerous interesting landmarks.
